  1. Anything that reestablishes control of what a person eats will  likely lead to weight loss.
  1. Fad diets all ultimately fail because none of them are based in an individual's food needs and personal preferences. (Rule #2: No diet fits everyone)
  1. Since we can't stay on any diet forever, the system eventually breaks down, control is gradually lost, and we lapse back into our familiar, haphazard and usually excessive eating habits. You stop losing weight and, usually, all the weight you lost, and often more, is promptly regained. Sound familiar?

So, What will it take?

So, what is it that makes weight loss such a difficult task, anyway? There is no easy answer. How many calories a person eats, burns up and, as a result, weighs, is a complex relationship. For a few people, being overweight is
just a result of overeating. For these few, simply cutting back on the food they eat will result in weight loss. We now clearly know that these calorie-dependent obese patients are a small minority of all the millions who are overweight.

Research has shown that, for most
overweight people, how many calories they eat is only one component of the equation that determines how much they weigh. We now know that multiple genetic, metabolic, physiologic, and biochemical factors determine each person's individual tendencies to either become overweight or not. This is why neither the weight loss nor the maintenance programs should be ignored.

We now know that being overweight is a life-long
disease. That's right - it's a disease. It is no less a serious, life-long medical problem than is high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. Obesity now has surpassed even smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in our country. Just as there is no "7-Day Program to Cure Diabetes," there is no "7 Day Diet" or "30-Day Diet." The journey you are about to begin as a patient of the Albright Bariatric Clinic (ABC) is a lifelong plan to control your body fat - not cure the problem. There is no cure. But fat loss can be accomplished and maintained. But remember - and you need
